Silistra
Silistra is a town that is situated in the northeastern part of Bulgaria, on the bank of the river Danube. The town boarders with the districts of Rousse, Razgrad, Shumen, Dobrich also it is not far from the Romanian boarder. The territory of the region includes parts of the Danubian hilly Plain, Dobrudja and the lowlands of Ludogorie. The rivers that flow through the region are small and often dry out in the summer. The Danube is a natural waterway linking Silistra with central and Eastern Europe.
The natural and historical places of interest make Silistra a very attractive place for cultural, ecological, rural and hunting tourism. The most interesting natural site in the area is the lake Srebarna. The lake is situated to the west of the town of Silistra and is part of the “Srebarna” Biosphere Reserve, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. In the part of the river Danube that flows near Silistra have been formed small islands that are suitable for recreation tourism. The Karakuz reserve offers great opportunities for hunting tourism, on the other hand the natural reserves of “Malak Preslavets” and “Srebarna” are well – known places for ecotourism in Bulgaria.
Apart from the natural places of interest in Silistra, there are many important historical sites that could be visited:
- The Kyuchuk Kaynardja Fountain in the village of Kaynardja, where was signed the peace treaty between Russia and Turkey in 1774;
- The War grave near the village of Shumentsi in memory of the soldiers who died in 1916 for the liberation of Dobrudja.
